Chapter 20

A COUPLE of hours and one long, hot shower later, I was restless and more than ready to spend some energy in the welcoming hands of a beer or ten.

I yearned for some company, to relax and talk bullshit, solve the world’s problems with like-minded drunkards, tap my feet to the beat of blaring music, brag about my shit, and wriggle a little on the dance floor if they had one. Hey, maybe watch some girls drool over me—only I wouldn’t let them do anything except maybe exchange a few quick smooches to establish I’ve still got it. I hadn’t quite decided how to approach the whole Even situation. Some substitute interest didn’t sound all bad, in theory anyway.

I spent the remainder of the afternoon in laziness, finding time for both a quick nap in the rarely used old hammock and grabbing more to eat from the kitchen, where my most dutiful grandmother had filled a tray with freshly baked bread and some rolls for the hungry farmhands. I have never eaten as much in my entire life as I did during those weeks on the farm, and still I lost weight. I gained muscles, that much is evident. Ten weeks of boot camp, fjord style, yielded some welcome visible results.

When the party call finally came for me, I was about to head down to the main road, too restless to hang around at the farm. On the other end of the line, a girl told me to be ready in ten minutes, or else a long walk to Vik awaited me. She hung up the second I said “Okay.”

I scrambled down a shortcut on one of the old trails to make it, and I nearly poked my eye out on some low birch branches as I cut through the dense cluster of green before coming out on the main road. An old white Volkswagen screeched to a halt next to me a minute later, and an Asian-looking girl rolled down her window.

“Jeez, what happened to you? Get in!” she ordered. I made a great first impression by having tears pour out of my eye and frantically telling her I thought I had lost my eyeball.

“You’ll be fine,” she said after a quick survey. “A bit red, but nothing to worry about. I’m going to be a doctor. Trust me, I have diagnosed people for years already. I’m Birgit, by the way. You have heard about me.” Oh yes. Birgit. The best friend. Very sweet, and I did nothing to stop myself from picturing a naked Even in bed with her. I studied her for too long without saying anything, because she interrupted my churning brain and said, “I was adopted from China, in case you wonder about anything other than the scandal Even told you about.”

“Right, yeah, he did tell me,” I said, still blinking with the bad eye, and in all likelihood coming off as an arrogant nutcase. “Um….”

She waved me off, saying, “Whatever. Spending your summer
